Google has started its free SMS services via Gtalk in India. Users are now allowed to add their friends mobile phone numbers and send messages to their mobile phones from your Google account. This feature is supported only in Gtalk service.

This service is also available for Google Apps email accounts also, but you need to purchase credits to use the service. For free Gmail accounts users, you get 50 credits to send the SMS to particular number for each day. The account is backup by another 50 SMS credits once you finish sending the messages to all the users in your chat lists. You can increase your credit limit by 5 if your friend responds to the chat SMS send. You can add your friends contact number and start using the service.

Since the credit limit to each user on your web chat is 50, there is a possibility of friends spamming into your mobile Inbox. Google has started this service in few countries and you can send messages in that supported countries only. In India, Google only support mentioned telecom operators like Aircel, IDEA, Loop Mobile, MTS, Reliance, Tata DoCoMo, Tata indicom, Vodafone (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Gujarat, A.P, Bihar, W.B. & A & N, Assam, N.E.). There are many operators which may be included later.

Buying of credit option is always available once your SMS credit options are over. This will work as the normal chat with your friend as the SMS comes back to your chat window. Your friend who reverts the SMS, will be charged the local SMS charges applied by the operator.
